Full Plot Summary

The Iron Mask (1929) follows a number of years after the first adventures of the Three Musketeers. D’Artagnan (Douglas Fairbanks) is now the Captain of the Musketeers of the King of France, Louis XIV, the young King. The throne is endangered, however.

Queen Anne, in a discreet way, tells D’Artagnan that Louis had a twin brother, Philippe, who was concealed during birth to avoid civil war. Evil Cardinal Richelieu and his spy Count Rochefort, plan to kidnap the young prince and put him in the place of the twin and assure their power.

D’Artagnan and faithful Constance save Philippe, and even the old friends Athos, Porthos and Aramis assist in foaming the conspiracy. The agents of Richelieu take Philippe to the feared prison of Bastille where he will live his life as the unknown Man in the Iron Mask.

Years pass. Adult Louis XIV (the two twins are portrayed by William Bakewell) becomes a selfish, threat-monger king. Rochefort uses him to work against D’Artagnan. The musketeer finds his old friends in prison and also knows that Philippe is alive, in his familiar iron mask.

The old-fashioned musketeers make a hopeless escape. D’Artagnan must face his old friends in a dilemma between obedience to the king and friendship. In order to eliminate rebellion on the part of Athos, Aramis and Porthos, he duels them but eventually yields to his friends.

The musketeers reunite and liberate Philippe and have intentions to overthrow the despot Louis. But Rochefort betrays them. During the tragic climax of the film, D’Artagnan takes the fight with Rochefort to the duel in order to save the escape of Philippe. He is dying and at the time, he observes the visions of his lost comrades in death, who are about to explore the world beyond.

The heroic sacrifice of the musketeers brings about the legitimate rule, however, at the highest cost possible.

Movie Review

The Iron mask (1929) is the most personal and emotional movie that Douglas Fairbanks made. All the stunts, costumes, and sets scream final bow by silent film greatest action hero.

At 50 and more, Fairbanks plays as he has been doing. His sword fights are poems of motion and the close-ups show a new emotional level. Marguerite De La Motte performs brilliantly as Constance, and William Bakewell is credibly acting the roles of the royal twins.

Allan Dwan is a confident director who knows how to balance spectacle and character moments. There is a lot to be impressed by in the values of the production: costumes, big sets, and the common stunt games of Fairbanks. The primitive part-talkie soundtrack of today, however, does not diminish the weight in short speeches by Fairbanks.

The tragic ending is too gloomy to the swashbuckler fans. Sometimes it runs slowly through court intrigue. But this is a bitter taste that adds permanence to the film.

The Iron Mask is a film of incredible value as a domain movie, which is accessible to the masses. This free classic movie will be treasured by those who love silent films and Fairbanks fans particularly when it is being shown in its restored versions with the score by Carl Davis. In his last silent masterpiece, Douglas Fairbanks actually gives up his life to his art.
