The Strange Predicament, and published on February 9, 1914, is an important occurrence in the film history, i. e. it was the very first film when Chaplin invented and played the role of the Tramp.
On the stage (released two days early) Tramp got to world’s stage through Kid Auto Races at Venice and the character was created on stage in Mabels Strange Predicament where the character was improvised by Chaplin and the character that made him the icon of the world was discovered.

🎞️ Historical Importance
“I had no idea of the character. But as soon as I was dressed up he was completely born.
This is what Charlie Chaplin, My Autobiography says.
The haphazard dressing of Chaplin in baggy trousers, tight jacket, oversized footwear, derby hat and toothbrush mouth, would turn out to be the fashion statement of the 20 th century humorous scene. Although he was only just aboard at Keystone, Mabel in her Strange Predicament is his creative breakthrough. This movie has been written and directed by Mabel Normand who is a significant screen star and filmmaker on her own and who also assisted in the mentoring of Chaplin in his initial appearances on screen.
🍾 Slapstick and Subtext
It is a rapid, physical comedic farce, full of physical comedic scenes, confused identities, and risque bedroom humor, which, even 101 years later, seems surprising to be so daring. The drunken act of Chaplin (realistic and exaggerated simultaneously) portrays the physical brilliance that was to become his hallmark.
It is interesting to note that Chaplin is rather mischievous and rougher than the Tramp is in later productions, where he would become a sympathetic loser.
