The Stranger (1946) Orson Welles Hunts Evil in Post-war America.
The Stranger (1946) is a film that came out in the shadow of the WWII and is a rare blend of suspense, political revenge, and noir mysteries. Directed by and starring Orson Welles, the movie has a brilliant cast of Edward G. Robinson and Loretta Young and has been considered to be one of the first films which used Holocaust footage as part of a story.
This was the same film released commercially that Welles directed in his lifetime, as a director- and now in the public domain.
📚 Plot Summary
Franz Kindler is a high-ranking former Nazi who has cleverly managed to inter his past, under his new name Professor Charles Rankin, a well-esteemed teacher in a small Connecticut town. He is not only married into a big American family, his wife Mary is the daughter of a Supreme Court Justice.
But peace doesn’t last.
In comes Mr. Wilson, a dogged detective of the United Nations War Crimes Commission (Edward G. Robinson). Following Kindler by way of an associate of his by the name of Meinike, Wilson embarks on unmasking the mask that professor Kindler has worked hard to conceal.
Kindler gets surrounded with evidence, such as a body in the woods and a dog in the family that is poisoned. As Mary eventually discovers the horrifying secrets about her husband and his background it becomes a matter between blind allegiance and law.
The movie ends with a Gothic type of bell tower in which Kindler dies in a melodramatic falling to the ground – symbolic of the destruction of the fascism itself.
