The Count (1916) Chaplin Witty Silent Comedy on Misunderstood Identity.

Count (1916) is the fifth film of Charlie Chaplin at Mutual Film and is one of the classical examples of his genius in silent slapstick comedy. This short movie, co-starring Eric Campbell and Edna Purviance, is a mixture of witty physical comedy with an identity-mistaken-identity-societal-rise tale.

The Count, which was released in September 1916, features a classic tramp character of Chaplin going through the twists and turns of a situation, confused as a noble person in the bid to court a wealthy heiress. There is no conversation and expressive acting and physical comedy of Chaplin become the main attraction delighting viewers even now, a century later.

📚 Story Overview

Chaplin takes the role of an apprentice of a tailor, who burns the trousers of a count by mistake and is immediately sacked. Meanwhile his boss (Eric Campbell) finds a note on which the actual Count is unable to go to a party. Using the opportunity, the boss masquerades as the Count to court Miss Moneybags (Edna Purviance) who is a wealthy heiress.

And Chaplin, who does not realize this, also comes to the party seeking to impress the same woman causing comic havoc as the two imposters fight over who should get her attention. The actual Count later appears, dials the police against the imposters and Chaplin frantically flees in the midst of the party.

Slapstick, confusion of identity, and high-speed chases feature this combination of Chaplin, who was known to have a trademark sense of humor.
