The Ghoul (1933): Exhuming a Lost British Horror Secret
The Ghoul, released in 1933, is one of the first non-Universal horror films of Boris Karloff, a somber, atmospheric story of ancient curses and resurrection and lost treasures. Combining the gothic flavor of The Mummy with the tint of the British mystery, the movie was thought to have been lost until it was rediscovered many years later. The Ghoul now available in the public domain, is a rare insight into Karloff working abroad and at the beginning of British horror films.
Renderer Plot Synopsis: Death Is Just the Beginning
Henry Morlant (Boris Karloff), the rich and strange Egyptologist, is fascinated by the idea of eternal existence. He feels that the jewel of the gods named The Eternal Light will be given to the god Anubis by being buried with it and he will thus be immortal. However, a few seconds after his seeming death, his intrigues-monger of a servant robs the jewel before Morlant can be turned into an insect.
These strange happenings start as the relatives of Morlant come to his vast estate to claim his will. Morlant who has only experienced a cataleptic seizure wakes up and gets out of his sarcophagus furious. On the opinion that he has been deprived of his key to immortality, he prowls the estate hunting down the jewel, diverting to other doubtful figures.
In the end we see that the actual villain is the pretentious vicar Nigel Hartley (Ralph Richardson in his film debut), which has been orchestrating things in the background. The doomed jewel is subsequently lost in an incineration of fury, Morlant is brought to his ultimate demise, and the couple which survives (Betty and her lover) flee the flaming tomb.
