Behind the Scenes: Censorship and Controversy
The film was originally based on the scandalous theatrical production, Dishonored Lady, and the film received significant postponements because of the complaints of the Hays Office (the censorship agency of Hollywood at that time). Initial versions were considered too scandalous, with many affairs and backgrounds of family scandals. The original script was substantially sanitized, affairs were cut, and even all hint of murder or licentiousness was eliminated so as to fit the rigid content policies of the day.
The changes do not alter the emotional essence and noir sense of the film, as the script is crisp, and the cinematography is so stylish and elegant that the film captures the fall and the renaissance of Madeleine.
