Full Plot Summary
Swing High, Swing Low 1937 movie opens in a passenger ship that is in the Panama Canal Zone. Maggie King is a shipboard hairdresser to be able to see the world and earn her living. One day she crosses paths with Skid Johnson, a brash, trumpet‑playing soldier celebrating his last day in the army.
Maggie does not want to have anything to do with Skid at the beginning. He is angry, insistent, a bit over-confident. However, after a little prodding–and her friend Ella is not left out–she finds herself going on a double date in Balboa with Skid and his hypochondriac friend Harry. The night becomes riotous. The fight in the nightclub erupts and Maggie finds herself in the fray.
Maggie misses the ship to the United States due to the fight and the confusion that ensues. She is left stranded in Panama with no money and no definite plan and she decides to move in with Skid and Harry. Initially, it is a clumsy affair: Maggie does not entirely trust Skid, and she is resolute to remain independent. With time however, she gets to see a different side of him. He is gifted, kind at heart behind the surface and truly loyal to his music.
Skid’s big dream is to make it as a trumpet player. He even pledges his trumpet when cash is in short supply. Maggie silently brings it to him, thinking he should have a real chance. Knowing that Harry supports her and she is encouraged, Skid finds a job of playing in a local club in Panama. His trumpet playing and easy-going nature soon make him a sensation and the fortunes of the trio start to gain.
As they work and live together, Maggie and Skid fall in love. Their jokes are diluted into real affection and they are finally married and they become a duo onstage and offstage. Maggie sings frequently when Skid plays, and the club act is popular. Then life seems good: they love, have music, and a sense of purpose.
New temptations come with success. Skid gets the opportunity to climb to a larger stage, and as his fame increases, so do glamorous singer Anita Alvarez. Anita is highly intelligent and cosmopolitan and she regards Skid as a collaborator who can bring her act to the next level. She appeases his ego and asks him to join her in a more glamorous and fast life.
Skid is beginning to reform as his star begins to shine. He consumes more alcohol, sleeps late and is less responsible. He assures Maggie that he will come when he gets away at work but his letters and calls become less frequent. Anita intercepts a crucial message when Maggie goes to meet him and Skid does not turn up to meet her ship. To add to the situation, she calls again and this time she finds Skid with Anita and forms the worst idea.
Offended and demeaned, Maggie is ready to leave. She initiates a divorce and even lets herself drift towards the more stable, reliable Harvey Howell who promises her a more peaceful and secure future. Meanwhile, Skid is devastated by the death of Maggie. His alcohol consumption gets worse and his trumpet playing gets worse. His fame, which he had been after, begins to slip away and his career goes down the drain.
Later in the movie, it becomes a question of whether Skid can get himself together, as a musician and a man, and whether Maggie can forgive him and believe that he has actually changed. Through the support of a good friend, Harry, a big radio date, and the long-lasting emotional connection of Maggie and Skid, the novel progresses to a hopeful denouement based on a major musical chance and a potential romantic reunion.
Although various prints differ in detail because of editing and lost footage, the main storyline is retained: two average people get to know each other in Panama, fall in love and fight, are divided with pride and fame, and have to choose whether love is worth the second chance.
