The movie begins with police chasing an escaped convict that has buried himself in the beach sand right under a guard, which causes a series of chases by cliff and the shore as he keeps evading officers. In the commotion, the convict manages to row to the sea when a young woman and her mother are in danger of drowning; he salvages first the girl, then her mother and then her heavy-looking suitor in a manner that, as we all know, was comically used, hauling Campbell by the beard. Thankful, the rich family takes the convict to their mansion where he is dressed like a guest and where he joins a high society party as he attempts to hide his criminal status with the authorities. Within the house, a series of slapstick situations, sliding-door pursuits and jealousal battles ensues as the suitor identifies him and tries to hand him over to the cops but Chaplin as the character of the film continually eludes capture through improvisation and physical prowess.
