Full Plot Summary
Paris is trembling with apprehension. Young women disappear after they pose before enigmatic painter called Bluebeard. Gaston Morrell, a gifted puppeteer and artist, the story is about a person with a monstrous liaison behind his beautiful appearance.
Lucille is a gentle dressmaker who encounters Morrell by a friend. She helps him to design costumes to his puppet shows and falls in love with his artistic interest. But danger lurks. Morrell confronts Renee, his rival and jealous lover at home. He loses his temper when she asks what happened to his models which disappeared. He then rips her with his own hands and throws her into the river Seine.
Morrell has a black secret known to art dealer Jean Lamarte. He makes money out of selling the paintings of the killer at high prices and remains quiet. But Lamarte slips up. He sells one of the works of Morrell to a duke, which exhibits its publicity. One of the victims of Bluebeard is seen by a keen policeman in the portrait.
Undercover agent Francine, who is the sister of Lucille, is called in by inspector Lefevre. Francine approaches Lamarte to order a portrait posing with her father. Lamarte wavers but gluttony conquers. He sets up Morrell who comes and paints her hoping to get a huge payoff.
Morrell intends to abandon painting in order to save Lucille the impact of his curse. But Lamarte drives him into one more work. Francine knows Morrell at the home of her sister. Panic ensues and Morrell ties her using his cravat and kills Lamarte as he attempts to escape.
Police intimate on discovering the cravat during the funeral of Francine. Lucille sees it and recognizes it to be that of Morrell. She confronts him. Morrell tells his origin in a chilling confession. He rescued a woman whom he fell in love with and painted her as a starving student. He killed her in anger when she disappeared and afterward when she made fun out of him by calling him a prostitute. All the models since then transform into her image in his mind, which causes endless murders.
Lucille heads for the police. Morrell assaults, but cops storm in- they had been following her. His reign of terror is over as Morrell falls into the Seine, during a desperate rooftop chase.

Bluebeard (1944) is a shining star of PRC at the Poverty Row. It has good chills and good performances despite having a low budget.
John Carradine is mesmerising as Morrell. He is charismatic and insane, which is well expressed by his tall body and passionate eyes. Jean Parker makes it seem that Lucille is being brought to life by Jean Parker. Minor characters such as the hardworking inspector Nils Asther bring in polish.
Minimal sets are wonders that Director Edgar G. Ulmer plays with. Dark shots and close-ups create fear. The rhythm remains quick, which results in a suspenseful ending.
The fairy tale is adapted cleverly and with psychological depth in the story. Certain twists of the plot are convenient, and the production values indicate the budget constraints. Nevertheless, the ambience and the work of Carradine make it higher.
