Full plot summary

Pete Morgan is a handicapped farmer residing in a remote farm with his stern-looking sister Ellen and their adopted daughter Meg whom they have brought up as their own. As Meg convinces the local boy Nath Storm to assist in the household tasks, Nath believes that he would take a shortcut by walking through the woods around, Pete panics and prohibits anyone to venture into the woods, citing screams in the dark and the existence of a mysterious red house abandoned in the woods. Curiosity makes Meg and Nath start to visit the woods secretly, despite the irritation of his girlfriend, Tibby, when Nath becomes increasingly close to Meg.

In every journey into the woods, there are new hints: odd peals, half-covered remains, and those hints that the superstition of which Pete supposedly is so fervent, conceals something factual and ugly. The situation in the farm becomes volatile with the worsening of the mental condition of Pete; he becomes possessive of Meg and wanting more and more to keep the youngsters out of the red house and hired hand Teller is following his own checkered agenda. Later Meg finds out the realities of the situation that Pete had murdered a woman called Jeannie in a jealousy filled fury at the red house and that this event is connected with her own past this forces a grand finale where secrets, guilt and obsession lead Pete to self-destruction. The red house is literally and symbolically burned down in the end of the film, which allows Meg and Nath to look into the future where they no longer have to live within the lies on which their life was built.

Genre and key themes

The Red House is a borderline thriller, mystery, and film-noir with a conventional haunted place in the woods plot overlaid by a plot of psychological horror rather than supernatural scares. Its main themes are the poisonous nature of repressed guilt, how possessive love can turn out to be control and youth innocence versus corruption in adulthood. The brooding score by Rozsa and the dark and gloomy black-and-white camera work enhances the noir and makes the surrounding forest a metaphor of trauma and secrets that cannot remain hidden.
