Full Plot Summary

In the jungle of South America, greedy plantation owner Klaas Van Gelder has an ambitious plantation manager called Barney Chavez. Barney is in secret passion over the beautiful young wife of Van Gelder, Dina. Barney is greedy and lustful; therefore, he kills his boss to make the way to Dina and the plantation.

The murder is watched by an aged native witch called Al-Long. She also confronts Barney and curses him horribly as a punishment to his crime. Barney dismisses her threats as being superstitious.

Barney shortly thereafter gets married to the widow Dina and becomes the plantation owner. However, weird things start happening. Barney is experiencing a savage metamorphosis that engulfs him at night. He becomes a roaring gorilla man, having no human mind in him as he walks the jungle dark.

A succession of cruel animal assaults intimidate the workers in the plantation. There are an increasing number of mysterious killings and something deadly haunts the jungle. Police Commissioner Taro, an old fashioned yet intelligent lawman comes in to investigate this suspicious murder of Van Gelder and the recent killings.

Taro played by Lon Chaney Jr. thinks that the events are linked by the supernatural powers. He interroates Barney who is more paranoid and unstable. Dina observes her new husband as behaving weirdly and at night he goes missing in the jungle instead of attending her.

Dina trails Barney on one of the moonlit nights, to the deepest points in the rainforest. The awful reality is revealed to her when the metamorphosed Barney assaults her as a gorilla. The jungle night is pierced by her screams.

After the terrors, commissioner Taro makes rush to the scene. He fights the monster-Barney and shoots him. Barney dies and the curse sets him free and he goes back to be a human being. Another victim of the ancient mysteries of the jungle is taken.

Movie Review

Bride of the Gorilla (1951) takes on the constraint of low budget to make the accidental entertainment. Its campiness and melodramatic performances are now appreciated by the modern viewers.

Raymond Burr gives his whole effort to the madness of Barney, and he gives extreme stares and tortured looks. Barbara Payton is melodramatic as Dina. Lon Chaney Jr. brings some gravitas even with little screen time as the superstitious commissioner.

Curt Siodmak works effectively with little budget. The jungle is created with foggy studio backlots instead of real ones. Gorilla scenes are dependent on the use of shadows and suggestion since the creature effects cannot rival the big studio productions.

The pacing is briskly done in the 66-minute running time. And others are disillusioned with the transformation sequences, which are hinted at rather than depicted. The writing is so serious and this adds to the camp worth.

Being a free sphere film, there are many different versions of different quality. Love the Bride of the Gorilla (1951) full movie and this free classic movie will become an excellent example to watch because of the overindulgence of creature features in the 1950s. Perfect with terrible movies and MST3K party watching.
