Full Plot Summary

The French artist, Michel Marnet, is an eloquent, famous ladies man who is heading to New York on a luxury ocean liner that is traveling between Europe and New York. He is headed to get married to Lois Clarke, an American heiress who is rich and will provide him not only with a stable life but also with monetary security. The same ship features Terry McKay, an American singer, and an ex-nightclub performer going back to New York to get married to her stable, betrothed Kenneth Bradley.

The first encounter between Michel and Terry is due to gossip on the ship board. Michel is photographed in a magazine and other passengers talk about him as a playboy. Terry is made fun of by her tablemates over him and soon she finds herself chatting with them and then even having dinners. What started as harmless flirting slowly turns into a real relationship. They are both witty, observant, and somewhat world-weary, both of them see in the other that there is someone there who realizes that there is more to life than just small talk.

They are conscious of the fact that they both have their partners and therefore they attempt to maintain some space even going to the extent of not eating together in order to stop the gossips. The ship however stops at Madeira where Michel takes Terry ashore to see his favorite grandmother whom he calls Janou. Terry finds another side of Michel in the home on the hillside of Janou, where there is no noise or cold, and Michel is respectful, loving, and tender. Grandmother Janou instantly takes a liking to Terry and mildly encourages Michel to calm down and create a normal life rather than a life where he moves around sleeping around.

Back in the ship, Michel and Terry get closer to each other. They discuss their future and their tradeoffs and giving up comfort to get true love. At the point when they are close to New York, they are obviously in love, despite the fact that the words were never uttered explicitly by either of them.

The liner has a decision to make when they are heading towards the harbor. Instead of eloping or simply terminating their ongoing affairs, they accept to take a test. She signs a singing engagement in a Philadelphia night club, where she works diligently in six months time so that she could arrive at the meeting with her own money and freedom. Both envision that the meeting will be a fresh new start that is clean and hopeful.

On the day that many have awaited Michel gets to the Empire State Building early in the morning, with nervous anticipation. He is waiting until the time passes by, people come and go, the elevator’s doors open and close. Little does he know that Terry is in a rush to meet him, however, when she goes across a busy street in front of the building, she is hit by a car. She is seriously injured by the accident, and, ultimately, partly paralyzed below the waist. There is uncertainty whether she can walk again because of the doctors.

Terry does not want to bring Michel into the picture, humiliated by her sudden disability, and preferring not to be a burden to Michel. She leaves him with an impression that she has merely changed her mind or the interest had vanished. She silently constructs another life. She goes to live in a small apartment and begins working at an orphanage teaching children to sing and do concerts. The children and their music are her solace, and she conceals her condition to the majority of people who are not a part of that world.

In his position of heartbreak and confusion, Michel thinks that Terry did not love him. He goes back to painting and his work is more serious and deep. His canvases start acquiring emotional nuances which the critics and buyers take notice, and his status of an artist gets increased. Nevertheless, he is unable to forget Terry and searches through New York crowds trying to find her face continually thinking of what might have happened that day.

Terry and Kenneth go to a performance in a theater several months later, towards the end of the year, around Christmas. Coincidentally, Michel is present as well with Lois. Since Terry is sitting and has neatly gotten her long gown to cover her legs and wheelchair, Michel fails to notice that she cannot walk. The encounter is short and tense, with pleasant words and hurt feelings. They both feel like each of them is not telling the entire story.

Michel requests information of Terry landlady on Christmas day and eventually makes the decision of visiting the apartment of Terry. On the wall, he finds an unfinished painting of one of his paintings of Grandmother Janou, which he donated many years ago, but was repainted by Terry following the accident. Taking a closer look, he notices a wheelchair and other representations of her impairment as well. The reality sinks on him: she had attempted to get to the Empire State Building but could not not of her own will.

Coming to his senses upon seeing that he has comprehended everything, Terry disintegrates and clarifies everything: the accident, her fear of falling a burden and her choice not to say anything, but to bind him to someone who is broken. Welled by Michel, but secretly shattered, informs her that it was love that was important, not beauty. He promises her that they can go on to have a life together, whether she ever comes out of it wholly.

The movie concludes in a reconciliatory and optimistic manner. Michel has demonstrated his ability to reform his manners and live a life of honesty; Terry has also demonstrated bravery and altruism even under the hardest conditions. The long and hard-awaited love is offered to them.

Movie Review

Love Affair (1939) is an exceptionally strong quiet, emotionally definite love story. Irene Dunne provides Terry McKay with a feeling of warmth, wit, and a kind of humour; the character feels thoroughly human when she interacts with the children of the orphanage and when she displays her pride and pain after the accident which made her and caused her to seem the ideal version of her character. Michel by Charles Boyer is a beautiful individual at first sight, but the movie skillfully demonstrates how love and frustration drive him to more responsible and serious actions and work.

The direction of Leo McCarey is more in support of natural encounters, breaks, and looks than grandiose speeches.
